OPINION:
Everett Piper’s Commentary piece, “Is a baby human?” (Web, May 8) fails to frame the real question regarding abortion — the one that divides and bitterly polarizes Americans. Whether a divine entity created something from nothing, including organisms on Earth, remains unanswered by the best brains among us and may for eons. The real question is whether government should use its power to take money from a pro-life person who devoutly believes a fetus is human in all aspects and use it to advocate and provide abortions. Federal laws allow 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations to do that.
Tax-exempt donations that could have been used to pay principal and interest on America’s $30 trillion debt increase the burden on 150 million profit earners, including pro-lifers, in the private sector, people who directly or indirectly pay all the government’s bills.
Abortion activists shout that a woman’s body is her property, but pro-life activists could reply, “My money is my property.” The only compromise is for government to tolerate abortions but never directly or indirectly advocate or pay for them.
If abortion is a sin, let it rest squarely on the fetus’s parents.
