As we learn more about the Robb Elementary School shooting in Texas, things are starting to look even darker than we originally supposed (“Uvalde school shooting response defined by agonizing mistakes, bad breaks,” Web, May 30).

The police who were first on the scene backed down from the gunman after he shot at them. They told us that the perpetrator was not actively shooting and was barricading in place; it appears it was the police who were barricading in place while the children were left to fend for themselves.

911 calls were pouring in from those where the shooting was taking place. Parents were begging law-enforcement officials to rush in and remove their kids from harm’s way, but the officers refused to act.

When the Titanic was sinking, an order was given to put women and children on the lifeboats first. However, there were plenty of men who jumped in to save their own skins. The limited space in the lifeboats necessitated leaving many children behind to drown.

It appears many of the police on the scene that day decided to step into the available life boats and leave children to perish in a bloody massacre.
