It saddens me that the would-be murderer of the late President Ronald Reagan will soon be fully freed from the justice system (“Reagan shooter Hinckley to be released June 15,” Web, June 1).

But for a fraction of an inch difference in where the bullet landed in the late president’s body, Hinckley would have been a successful and notorious assassin, markedly changing the course of history.

As we see so often, the passage of time, the blurring of memory and the deaths of many who were central figures in a heinous crime converge to open the door to a justice system which seems so often to look out first and foremost for the criminal. I will never forget that day in 1981 when the nation held its breath as our president was seriously wounded, cut down by an unhinged man.

It is understandable that many would ask whom the justice system is in place to serve.
