The ESPY awards take place Wednesday and the District will be represented.
The Washington Spirit’s Trinity Rodman was nominated for breakthrough athlete of the year, making her one of three Spirit to earn a nomination. Forward Ashley Hatch and goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury are also up for this year’s “Best NWSL Player.”Â
Other locals include Maryland lacrosse star Logan Wisnauskas (best college athlete in men’s sports), swimming great Katie Ledecky (best Olympian, best athlete in women’s sports), Georgetown soccer’s Dante Polvara (best college athlete in men’s sports) and Baltimore Orioles outfielder Trey Mancini (best comeback athlete).
Rodman, the daughter of former NBA star Dennis Rodman, paved her own path with the Spirit last year with five regular season goals as a rookie. Rodman, who took home the league’s rookie of the year award, was nominated alongside NBA guard Ja Morant, NFL running back Jonathan Taylor and skier Eileen Gu.
Rodman, Hatch and Kingsbury helped the Spirit win the NWSL championship last year.Â
The broadcast, which will be hosted by Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry on ABC, will start at 8 p.m. live from the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.Â
