When Washington revealed Commanders as its new nickname, some wondered what the team’s new mascot would be.
After the announcement, fans offered some humorous options on social media, including the Mandalorian from Star Wars or President Joe Biden’s dog whose name is also “Commander.”

But the satirical website The Babylon Bee has a different suggestion: General George Custer.
“General Custer, who famously said, ‘There are not enough Indians in the world to defeat the Seventh Cavalry,’ will be on the sidelines every game to cheer on the Commanders with the crowd.”

The article, which was published on Thursday, is a joke about the team changing the name from Redskins to Commanders as well as Custer.
After serving as a cavalry commander during the Civil War, Custer led regiments during the American Indian Wars. He died while leading the 7th Cavalry at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
The jokes about the team’s new mascot follow the teasing about a possible shortened version of Commanders: Commies.
