OPINION:
“Senate Republicans move to cut off federal funds for crack pipes” (Web, Feb. 10) shows just how of out of touch this administration is when it comes to addressing crises. Just the notion of giving out crack pipes as part of a “smoking kit” gives new meaning to incompetence.
It seems my experience with drug use and getting off drugs gives me more applicable experience to solve this crisis than any of these administration officials. I could never have imagined that a public health official would suggest giving a drug user the tools to do more drugs — in an effort to stop the person from doing drugs. What? How about cutting funding to the nations that ship and smuggle drugs here? How about reducing the market for drug dealers by decreasing the number of drug users? This should be a wake-up call to African Americans, who experienced the highest level of crack-related deaths in the ’80s and ’90s. Is this what the Biden administration thinks of us? Maybe Black Lives Matter doesn’t mean anything to them, either.
The administration’s miniscule amount of understanding of many current issues has turned those issues into high-level crises. Biden and the Democrats have lost all credibility; now, nothing they say or do can be trusted. They have misled us about the border crisis, gun violence, criminal law reforms and more. In the words of the late President Reagan, “Trust but verify.” I have to see that “smoking kit” for myself.
