There’s a scenario in which the Washington Commanders can actually clinch a playoff spot this coming weekend.

But things would have to break their way.

With two games left in the season, the seventh-seeded Commanders (7-7-1) can actually claim their spot on Sunday with a win over the Cleveland Browns — and losses by the teams just outside the playoff bracket.

In addition to Washington beating Cleveland, Seattle, Detroit and Green Bay would all have to lose their respective matchups. The Seahawks (7-8) host the New York Jets (7-8), while the Lions (7-8) face the Chicago Bears (3-12) and the Packers (7-8) play the Vikings (12-3).

Only the Seahawks, however, enter their matchup as an underdog — with the Jets being listed as 2.5-point favorites over Seattle. The Commanders (-1.5), Lions (-5.5) and Packers (-3) are all favored to win.

Commanders fans should also know there is a possibility in which Washington could be eliminated from the postseason this coming weekend.  Washington would fail to make the postseason if the Commanders lose to the Browns and both the Lions and Packers win.

A loss would put the Commanders at 7-8-1, while the Lions and Packers would both be 8-8. And with the Packers and the Lions facing each other in Week 18, Washington would be mathematically eliminated no matter the outcome because whoever wins between Green Bay and Detroit would finish 9-8. In the event of a tie, the Lions — who would be 8-8-1 in this scenario —would still finish ahead of Washington in the standings because Detroit beat Washington in Week 2.
