OPINION:
Newt Gingrich’s “An American majority, not a Republican majority: Part two” (Web, April 25) is a waste of column space if Mr. Gingrich still intends to create “a dramatic shift in American political and government system” (“An American majority, not a Republican majority: Part one,” Web, April 19).
Given the advancements in technology and the glacial speed and profound dysfunction/divisions within our current government system, rehashing U.S. history prior to Mr. Gingrich’s glory days is folly. Reagan’s “simple clear language: ’tear down this wall,’ ’evil empire,’ ’we win, they lose,’” is just the opposite of this week’s pro-Putin opinion column by Edward Lozansky and Matthew Ehret (“Diplomacy, not more arms is needed to avoid WWIII with Russia,” Web, April 26), which calls for more “diplomacy.” You can’t make a deal with leaders who lie, whether it’s former President Trump or Vladimir Putin.
The only lunatic here is Mr. Putin. And Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity still holds (doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result). Diplomacy has rarely worked. And it’d never worked in stopping a genocide. “Never again” must mean “never again.” President Biden calling Mr. Putin’s intention to end Ukraine as a nation “genocide” was not a gaffe; it was the truth.
World War III has already begun. It will be Mr. Putin who decides whether it goes nuclear. The only thing that can stop a tyrannical madman with a powerful army is a freedom-loving alliance with a more powerful army.
