I read with interest Thomas Walsh’s recent and significant “From disaster to opportunity: A turning point for the United Nations?” (Web, April 8).

The three “big guys” on the block — Russia, China and the United States — possess the most lethal toys in the world. Two of them possess the most powerful economies. Isn’t it time they all got together in a serious, concerted effort to explore and learn how to live together in peace, accepting the political and social differences of each?

We are not yet a federation of the planet. So accommodation of different systems is essential,



Or must we resign ourselves to Jake Barnes’ remark at the end of “The Sun Also Rises”: “Isn’t it pretty to think so?”
