OPINION:
Correct me if I am wrong, but Donald Trump did not start any wars during his time in office. So, according to Bob Woodward, a “national security emergency” would have been required for Middle East peace accords to be brokered.
To find such peace accords pre-Trump, we must go back to King Hussein of Jordan in 1994 and Anwar el-Sadat of Egypt 1978. Hussein made out a lot better than Sadat. For Sadat’s extraordinary statesmanship, the Arab League suspended Egyptian membership and two years later, Sadat was assassinated by an amalgam of Islamic radicals, including future al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.
The Abraham Accords emerged as a direct result of Trump’s initiatives to seek closer ties to Israel. These included moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and isolating Iran with sanctions and rejection of the nuclear pact. The stage was then set for the first progress in Middle East peace in over 50 years.
The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan were added to the list of those recognizing Israel’s right to exist.
I think we could endure more ’crises’ like that one.
