I was shocked when I read the headline to Michael McKenna’s op-ed, “Culture wars are important to America and worth the political fight” (Web, May 26). I disagree that culture wars and fights are “essential” to our nation. In fact they are extremely harmful because they promote division among our citizens.

How can anyone say the violent killing of over 63 million innocent preborn in abortion is “essential” to the nation? The decriminalization of abortion began with a poorly reasoned political, not constitutional, decision by the Supreme Court, and it has eroded our society’s basic respect for human life.

This lack of respect for human life has led to even more violence and soaring rates of crime: shootings, bombings, beatings, looting and riots.

Mr. McKenna seems to have fallen prey to society’s dehumanization of the preborn when he writes as though the only reason to protect the preborn is because the “developed world needs more children.” Have the lives of the preborn become so cheapened that we consider them a utility?

Pro-Lifers are not interested in fighting over abortion. They strive to protect human life and encourage respect for preborn life.
