LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: U.S. made by unlicensed-firearm owners

OPINION:

Many federal, state and local governments require lawful Americans with no criminal or mental-health prohibitions to buy a license to possess a firearm.

The American patriots of 1775 did not have licenses, nor were they required to have permits to possess arms to use against the king as they revolted.

Here’s the source of my confusion: If the patriots of 1775 did not a license or permit to “keep and bear arms,” why do the citizens of the nation they created by force of arms now need a license or permit to keep and bear arms?
