I always ask, “How does this happen?” whenever we learn that school boards have decided to include controversial curricula without parental input or consent (“Critical race propaganda,” Web, May 6). Even more shocking is the fact that my tax dollars are being offered as an incentive to school districts. This type of so-called education demonstrates negligence at the highest levels. I can’t understand how what is considered the best education system in the world continues to be shifted in a direction that has nothing with developing our students to compete in a global economy.

The Critical Race Theory curriculum teaches self-hatred. The notion that America is a racist nation or that slavery is the reason for African Americans’ current problems is insulting. If this is true then explain to me why this country elected an African-American president and vice president. Additionally, weighing merit according to race and gender, not character and content, ignores the struggles endured, sacrifices made and the lives lost during the civil rights movement. CRT ignores the possibility that our problems are due the fact that we chose not to take full advantage of the results of that movement, which increased opportunities.

In my opinion, unlike the civil rights movement, th CRT movement is based on redefining selective versions of our nation. It demonstrates its advocates’ general lack of understanding of the situation, and falls short when it comes to inculcating in our students the skills they need to develop into contributing adults.

One thing is for sure, according to Sen. Tim Scott: You can’t change racist attitudes with racist ideals.
