The main building at the University of Connecticut’s Hartford campus was closed for cleaning Monday after an equipment malfunction sent smoke throughout the building, a university spokesperson said.

A problem with the building’s air-handling system caused an internal belt to melt shortly after 2 a.m., filling the building with smoke and a burnt rubber smell, UConn spokesperson Stephanie Reitz said in a news release.

No injuries were reported and there was no significant damage to the building, Reitz said, but the building was closed Monday for specialized cleaning to remove the smoky smell and clean soot from the walls.

Online classes were held as scheduled, and the nearby School of Social Work building was not affected, Reitz said.
