OPINION:
I have to admit, I am confused. I read in the U.S. Constitution that the states are the ones in charge of creating and managing how their elections are to be performed (“ACLU blasts Democrats’ election bill as unconstitutional,” Web, March 4). So where do the Democrats get off making wholesales changes to a process over which the states have sole constitutional control?
The Constitution makes clear who may run for office, that voters must be citizens of a certain age, etc. So if I am correct, Congress can’t change the voting age to one below an attained majority, nor can it change citizenship requirements or how elections are conducted within the states. The entire election bill raises so many constitutional questions that it’s almost dead before it starts.
This is the very essence of what the Founders feared. It is now also the most clear reflection of how a party serves itself instead of the voters. No wonder the Democrats all love China; they are trying very hard to emulate the Chinese Communit Party.
I hope cooler heads and the U.S. Supreme Court prevail, or all that we have built since 1776 will be lost to the dustbin of what’s left of history (that which has not already been “canceled”).
Be careful what you vote for. You may well get it.
