GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - An armed man on the roof of an apartment building in South Carolina was shot by a sheriff’s deputy early Saturday, authorities said.

The incident happened at Pelham Village Apartments in Greenville just after 2 a.m., Greenville County Sheriff’s Lt. Ryan Flood said.

“When the deputy arrived on scene, a man was observed on the roof of the apartments,” Flood said in an emailed statement. “At some point during the interaction the person on the roof presented a firearm and subsequently an officer involved shooting took place.”

The man suffered at least one gunshot wound, Flood said. He was transported to an area hospital in stable condition, he said.

The deputy involved, whose name was not released, will be placed on paid administrative duty pending an internal investigation, which is standard procedure, Flood said.

Deputies were called to the complex after someone complained about noises on the roof, Flood said.

The wounded man’s name has not been released.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting, agency spokesman Tommy Crosby told The Greenville News.

“We’ll do whatever it takes to have a complete and thorough investigation,” he said.

The incident in Greenville County was the 10th officer involved shooting in South Carolina so far this year. In 2020, there were 49 officer-involved shootings in South Carolina.
