NORRIDGEWOCK, Maine (AP) - A Somerset County deputy shot a Skowhegan man in a confrontation after the man crashed his pickup truck, officials said Friday.
Trever A. Caouette, 24, was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital and then Eastern Maine Medical Center, where he underwent surgery, Sheriff Dale Lancaster said.
The confrontation at about 1:45 a.m. near a convenience store happened while deputies were investigating the crash nearby on Route 2.
Hours after the shooting, a State Police evidence response team vehicle was parked at the entrance of the convenience store while a pickup truck was in a ditch nearby with a trooper standing by.
Deputy Michael Lyman, who discharged his weapon, was put on paid administrative leave, which is normal procedure while the attorney general investigates the use of deadly force, Lancaster said.
