BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A committee pushing for Bennington to become one of 48 Appalachian Trail communities is planning a virtual designation ceremony for the town in early June.
Bennington learned last fall that its application to be a designated Appalachian trail community was approved. The town will now be listed on the website of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, will host a summer gathering to promote the trail each year and post signage about services available to hikers in the town, the Bennington Banner has reported.
A group that includes members of Bennington’s Green Mountain Club, local economic and community groups, and residents first decided to apply for the designation in October 2019.
The June 3 ceremony on Zoom will feature speakers, local music and some giveaways to people who attend, said Jonah Spivak, chairman of the local trail group, according to the newspaper.
