BOONTON, N.J. (AP) - The deaths of a Boonton woman and her 11-year-old son in an icy pond last week were accidental, the Morris County prosecutor’s office said Tuesday.

Emergency crews recovered the bodies of 35-year-old Wanda Syed and son Uzair Ahmed on Feb. 23 in the upper pond area of Grace Lord Park in Boonton.

Syed’s 6-year-old son was found unharmed at the scene. Police were called to the area by a person who reported the 6-year-old standing near the water and shouting for his mother.

Footprints leading to the water led emergency crews to the bodies, which were found at the top of a dam near a waterfall where the Rockaway River flows through the park. Authorities didn’t say how or why the pair entered the water.

The Morris County medical examiner said “there is no cause to believe there was any criminal activity involved in either individual’s death,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
