HONOLULU (AP) - Almost 5,000 gallons (nearly 19,000 liters) of untreated wastewater has overflowed in East Honolulu.
The Hawaii Department of Environmental Services responded Wednesday to the incident that they said was caused by a pump station error.
The error prompted a manhole to discharge thousands of gallons of untreated wastewater, KITV-TV reported.
About 500 gallons (about 1,900 liters) were recovered by the state agency, while the remaining 4,500 gallons (about 17,000 liters) entered a nearby stream.
The state Department of Environmental Services said it cleaned, disinfected and deodorized the area affected.
Warning signs have been posted in the area and the state Department of Health was notified of the incident.
