LANSING, N.Y. (AP) - Occupants of two speeding vehicles exchanged gunfire before a crash in central New York early Saturday, leaving one person dead and four others injured.

Both vehicles lost control before 2 a.m. just north of Ithaca, with one hitting a telephone pole and the other coming to rest in a residential yard, according to the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene four others were hospitalized. Police did not identify the victims or provide details on their injuries. It was not clear how the one occupant died.

Sheriff’s deputies said officials had received a complaint about a loud dispute with gunfire involving the same people shortly before the crash. That caller had said the two parties left the site of the dispute in two vehicles.
