LAS VEGAS (AP) - A school police sergeant’s handgun accidentally fired when he was knocked to the ground as a motorist drove away from a traffic stop Thursday near a Las Vegas elementary school, a school police spokesman said.

Clark County School District police Officer Bryan Zink said no one was hit by the stray gunshot and the driver of a black Nissan vehicle is sought after the incident a little before 9 a.m. near Harris Elementary School southeast of downtown.

Zink said the sergeant received minor injuries when he was knocked to the ground, and body-worn cameras from several officers were being reviewed in the investigation of the confrontation.

The motorist had been stopped by a school police traffic officer enforcing a school zone speed limit, Zink said, and demanded to speak with the officer’s supervisor before rolling up his car window and driving away.

The school campus was placed on lockdown after the gun discharged, but classes were not affected, the police spokesman said.

Las Vegas police and school district officers converged in the area. Zink said both agencies were investigating.
