A free lunch for everyone but the wealthy may not be very filling, but President Biden will spin a tale of bucks from only the wealthy anyway, and few from his side of the scam will harsh the Democratic mellow (“Moderate Biden force-feeding the nation with woke ideas,” Web, June 29). Even many academically and professionally successful Americans will fall in with the dole if their income is initially beneath the magic figure, not troubling to do the easy arithmetic that would predict troubles to come.

We know what Mr. Biden and his angry posse of rapacious progressives want. We have seen this nightmare in European political theaters for years, yet many think they will avoid being scarred by the plan. They will be harmed, of course, when the smooth gears of a spirited and rambunctious economy grind ever more slowly as tax dollars from the wealthy fall short of progressive fantasies, and capital shifts from productive pursuits to more and heavier governmental expenses.

Republicans appear incapable of rallying a cohesive opposition, even though their narrative is far more historically cogent than the creeping autocracy we are about to enter. With a scowl animating my soon-to-be entitled face, I hope that the appalling national debt stalls the addition of a Biden sculpture on Mt. Rushmore.
