In trying to satisfy everyone by social engineering, aren’t we are going overboard?
Recently Squaw Island, a small island on the Niagara River, was renamed Unity Island because the word “squaw” is deemed demeaning and offensive. However, its Massachuset (Algonquian) origin, “squa” (cognate with Narraganset “squaws”) simply means “woman,” much like the Polish word “kobieta.”
The problem is not with the word “squaw” but with prejudice against American Indians and that this word designates a female Indian. We need to learn from and appreciate the best in our history and heritage instead of whitewashing it.
Similar good intentions are illustrated by designating “hate” crimes. If a person is robbed, beaten and tortured, does it matter to this individual if the reason was hatred, fun or profit? Love and hate are human emotions against which we cannot legislate. It is what we do that matters. The criteria for punishment should be uniform and without any special considerations.
Cyberbullying is another serious issue, particularly among children, because communicants can be fictitious or anonymous. This problem is solved simply: by refraining from social networking. Another reward? You will not be hacked.
Making Hollywood fantasy reality is wonderful for entertainment but doesn’t work well for government and real-life situations.
