OPINION:
I found “Anti-Asian hate incidents rising despite former President Trump’s absence, waning COVID-19 fears” (Web, May 28) interesting, as it notes that even with Trump banished from the mainstream-news media and message-streaming services, crimes against Asians continue — under the Biden administration. The poitical left blames this violence on Mr. Trump’s claims that COVID-19 came from a Chinese military lab in Wuhan, not a wet market.
As it is now starting to look as though Mr. Trump was right, it could explain the continuing rise in violence. I hope that is not the case. In fact, I blame the news media going back 15 months ago for inciting this in order to have a crisis on which to blame Mr. Trump so he would not be reelected. CNN and MSNBC initially called it the Wuhan or China virus, but as soon as Mr. Trump said the same, it became “racist.” Mr. Trump never blamed the Chinese people; he blamed the tyrannical government under which they live.
The big question no one in the media has the guts to ask is, To what racial group do most of the anti-Asian assailants belong? Well, most are not White. And they very likely did not vote for Mr. Trump. (I dare someone to prove me wrong on that score.)
The sadder thing is that this has been going on for decades, per the Justice Department and the FBI. Asian Americans are afraid to point this out for fear it will only incite further violence.
If I were Asian, I would be more afraid of a Black Lives Matter hat wearer than a MAGA hat wearer.
