LEWISVILLE, S.C. (AP) - A man who police say fired at deputies in two South Carolina counties was found dead, authorities said.
Investigators did not give a cause of death or identify the man who was found Sunday night in woods in Lewisville near the state Highway 9 exit on Interstate 77. No officers were wounded.
Lancaster County deputies said the incident started when the man fired at an officer as he arrived to investigate a domestic disturbance with bullets hitting the deputy’s car.
That deputy and a second officer chased the man at speeds up to 100 mph (160 kph) until the driver wrecked in Chester County, investigators said.
The man tried to flag down a car after the wreck, but a Chester County deputy in an unmarked car stopped, firing at the man when he pulled out a gun, authorities said.
It wasn’t clear if the Chester County deputy’s shots hit the man, who was found dead in the woods with a gun nearby, investigators said.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating both shootings.
