BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) - A Florida man accused of attacking his pregnant girlfriend died in a car crash while fleeing deputies, authorities said.
Manatee County deputies responded to the couple’s Bradenton home Saturday night, officials told news outlets. Bradenton is located south of Tampa Bay.
The woman told deputies that Amir Keita Stevens, 30, had attacked her and threatened to kill her and her 1-year-old son, the sheriff’s office said. The woman fled to a neighbor’s home. When deputies attempted to contact Stevens, officials said the man refused commands to stop and drove away at a high speed.
A deputy followed Stevens’ vehicle, which eventually crashed into a bus stop, officials said. Stevens was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
The sheriff’s office is investigating the pursuit to determine if the deputy’s actions were appropriate, authorities said.
