OPINION:
On. Dec. 29 Massachusetts state Sen. Harriette Chandler said, “Beginning today, pregnant people who once faced near-insurmountable barriers accessing abortion care can now seize the right to control their own bodies” (“Mass. Legislature overrides veto, expands access to abortion,” Web, Dec. 29). Ms. Chandler is a sponsor of the ROE Act, a bill that legalized abortion through all nine months of pregnancy and passed over the governor’s veto.
Where has Ms. Chandler been? In 1973 the Supreme Court decriminalized abortion for the entire country, through all nine months of pregnancy, with the Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions. So abortion has been available up until birth ever since then. The ROE Act legalizes abortion throughout pregnancy in Massachusetts, anticipating the time when the Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions are reversed.
Ms. Chandler says women can now “seize the right to control their own bodies.” But women who abort exercise this “right” by killing someone else — a developing baby. In many instances the baby can feel extreme pain, as in the abortion method whereby babies’ legs, arms and heads are torn off. Ms. Chandler celebrates this killing. Where is her compassion for the human life of the unborn child?
The article also cites C.J. Doyle, executive director of the Catholic Action League, lamenting that many “Catholic” legislators voted for the bill, saying they won’t suffer a word of rebuke from church clergy or press and “no one will be denied Holy Communion.” This reminds me of the church’s treatment of the rabidly pro-abortion Joe Biden.
