RACINE, Wis. (AP) - Three people found fatally shot at a residence in Racine County last week were family members, sheriff’s officials said Tuesday.

Investigators believe 30-year-old Matthew Vinz killed his parents, whose bodies were found concealed in the home’s garage, according to Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling. Sixty-five-year-old Terrence Vinz and 62-year-old Debra Meagher had been dead “for a significant amount of time,” officials said.

Deputies checking on the welfare of the family last Friday said they heard a single gunshot as they arrived at the home in the Village of Rochester.

Sheriff’s crisis negotiators made multiple attempts to make contact with the occupants of the home and used an interior drone and tactical robots to learn their whereabouts.

In addition to the parents’ bodies found in the garage, deputies eventually located the couple’s son dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot in the basement of the home.
