QUITMAN, Miss. (AP) - The campgrounds at Clarkco State Park in east Mississippi are now safer for visitors after a group of AmeriCorps volunteers spent several days leveling the ground around the park’s camping pads.

The ground around the pads had eroded over time, creating a safety hazard.

“It creates a huge drop and a fall hazard for people who are coming out of their campers,” Sophia Farchione, one of eight volunteers helping out at Clarkco, told The Meridian Star.

Clarkco Park Manager Toney Fleming said five teams have helped with projects in the park over the last year. He said the volunteers help with projects that the park’s small staff are unable to complete.

AmeriCorps is a volunteer program supported by the U.S. government, foundations, corporations, and other donors. Corps members typically work in the program for up to 12 months and receive a stipend and education grant.

The team that worked at Clarkco was heading from there to Lake Charles, Louisiana, to help with disaster assistance.
