MIDLAND, Mich. (AP) - A police officer who was injured in a Christmas Eve fire was escorted home from the hospital by his fellow officers.

A line of 10 cars with Midland police and sheriff’s deputies led Tyler Hollingsworth to his home Friday, the Midland Daily News reported.

“It’s hard to put into words - my department, my people and my friends are just going out of their way for me,” said Hollingsworth, whose hands were thickly bandaged. “It’s hard to express how grateful and lucky and privileged I feel to have these resources and these people around to continuously help me through this.”

Hollingsworth and another officer were injured while trying to save a 49-year-old man who had doused himself with fuel on Dec. 24. Fire broke out in the Midland garage, and the man died.

Police and first responders went to a Flint hospital on Wednesday to show their support by flashing their lights from a parking lot. They drove past the home of Midland Officer Chuck Brown, who was also injured in the fire.
