HOLLISTON, Mass. (AP) - One person and more than a dozen dogs died in a house fire early Tuesday morning in Massachusetts, authorities said.

The fire in Holliston was reported at about midnight.

A couple who lived at the home escaped safely but one of them went back inside to try and rescue the dogs, according to a statement from the state Fire Marshal’s office.

That person became trapped on the second floor. Firefighters found the person near a bedroom and pulled them from the home, Deputy Fire Chief Mark Dellicker said at the scene.

Both people were taken to the hospital where one of them died.

No names were released.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by local authorities as well as state police assigned to the Fire Marshal’s office.
