GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves has chosen a Gulf Coast prosecutor to become a new judge on the state Court of Appeals.

Joel Smith has been district attorney since 2012 in Harrison, Hancock and Stone counties. He will fill a seat that has been vacant since last spring, when Sean Tindell left the 10-member court to become the state commissioner of public safety.

Reeves announced Smith’s appointment Thursday during an appearance in Gulfport. He also said he has chosen Crosby Parker as the acting district attorney. Parker has been an assistant district attorney for the three counties.
