PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Police are investigating Providence’s first homicide of the year.

A man was brought to Rhode Island Hospital with a gunshot wound at about 7:15 a.m. Sunday and was later pronounced dead, Maj. David Lapatin said at a news conference Monday.

He was identified as Tillman Hodge, 44, of East Providence. Police think Hodge was targeted, he said.

Investigators are trying to determine exactly where the shooting took place, but the car that took Hodge to the hospital was found about one-quarter of a mile away with bullets in it, Lapatin said.

No arrests were announced, but Hodge’s family has been interviewed and police are asking for anyone with information about the shooting to contact them.

Last year, the city’s first homicide of the year did not occur until late March.
