SWANTON, Vt. (AP) -
Village officials in Swanton say they expect to have a former hotel razed next year to prepare the site for future development.
Elisabeth Nance, Swanton’s economic development coordinator, told the St. Albans Messenger this week that although the coronavirus pandemic has slowed redevelopment plans Swanton is committed to the site’s redevelopment.
The three-story Riviere Hotel had served as a hotel since the 1800s before ultimately falling into disrepair. Swanton Village bought the building for about $30,000 earlier this year with the goal of eventually redeveloping the now dilapidated structure.
“We’ve already decided, from a historic preservation point of view, there’s really nothing left worth saving as a building,” said Nance. “There are things within the building worth saving, but with the building itself, there’s not much left historically that’s worth saving.”
The village is now trying to access grant funding to study the hotel as a brownfields site and prepare it for eventual demolition. Once cleared and cleaned up, village officials hope to sell the property to a developer.
