MILTON, Fla. (AP) - A Florida man was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to killing his girlfriend.

Santa Rosa County State Attorney Ginger Bowden Madden announced that Jerry Odum was sentenced immediately after pleading guilty on Friday to the August 2020 death of Vickie Edge.

Edge was struck in the head multiple times with a baseball bat and then strangled, prosecutors said.

In a news release prosecutors said sheriff’s deputies went to Odum’s home after Edge’s family members had not been able to reach her. They found her body in the living room.

Odum later confessed to killing Edge, the news release said.

An arrest report said Odum had promised Edge a wedding, but he was broke, WEAR reported. He told investigators that he felt killing her was his only way out, the report said.
