GREAT BEND, Kan. (AP) - A 20-year-old Kansas man died after falling 40 feet down an embankment into a creek in Barton County, authorities said.

Emergency crews were called Wednesday to Wet Walnut Creek near Great Bend by a family member of the victim, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said Thursday in a news release.

Paramedics attempted resuscitation on Manuel Castillo but he was pronounced dead at a hospital, The Wichita Eagle reported.

Investigators determined Castillo was walking along the creek bank when he fell down the embankment, which is covered with rock, metal rods and corrugated steel to prevent erosion. Castillo was cut and bruised by the fall and was incapacitated when he landed in about 2 feet of water.

A medical examination determined he died from an accidental drowning, Bellendir said.
