OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Administrators for middle school in Omaha are apologizing over the display of an Adolf Hitler quote in a school hallway earlier this week.

Westside Middle School Principal Kim Eymann and district Superintendent Mike Lucas sent an email to parents, students and staff Monday apologizing for the display, the Omaha World-Herald reported.

The quote read, “The man who has no sense of history is like a man with no ears or eyes,” and was posted on an eighth grade hallway marker board as part of a running “quote of the day” exercise.

“We made a mistake today at WMS,” the email said.

District spokeswoman Brandi Paul said officials don’t believe there was any malicious intent behind the display, which was posted by a school staff member.

“But malicious intent or not, it was something that needed to be addressed,” Paul said.

School officials will meet with the Anti-Defamation League, and will continue discussions that were begun last year to promote inclusivity, diversity and acceptance, Paul said.

The email said the school will teach students that it’s not appropriate to quote, without context, the German dictator and Nazi Party leader who instigated World War II and the Holocaust. The school will also provide staff with additional training in providing an inclusive, safe learning environment.

“This is not indicative of the culture we are trying to set,” the email said .
