COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina House and Senate are meeting in joint session Wednesday to select college trustees at four different colleges.

The highest profile race is for a seat on the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees, where former basketball star Alex English is trying to hold on to the seat he was appointed to last summer after a resignation.

English is challenged by Irmo businessman Kevin Hunter and Robert Dozier Jr., who served as a trustee before when he was president of the university’s Alumni Association.

The General Assembly will also be choosing someone for an at-large seat on The Citadel Board of Visitors. Among the candidates are former state Rep. Greg Delleney, who currently serves on the board as the governor’s appointee. Delleney served in the House from 1991 to 2018 and is a 1974 graduate of The Citadel.

Three other candidates are running for the seat. C. Douglas Barnes of Lancaster; Kenneth Davis III of Columbia; and Andrew Helfer of Columbia are all Citadel graduates

Lawmakers will also choose a new trustee for Lander University. Toni Able of Laurens was on the board before, and both she and James Shubert of Simpsonville are Lander graduates.

Macie Smith of Columbia is the only candidate for a seat on the South Carolina State University board.
