COMPTON, Calif. (AP) - Two rival gang members who got into a gunfight that killed a 3-year-old boy in Compton were sentenced to life in prison Friday.
Kevaughn Harris, 30, was sentenced to 103 years to life and 32-year-old Dwayne Ward was sentenced to 89 years to life.
Harris was walking toward a car parked in a liquor store lot in January 2018 when he got into a confrontation with Ward, who was in a nearby parked car, prosecutors said.
The men pulled handguns and opened fire.
Harris’s girlfriend and her 3-year-old son, Franklin Pon-Ros, were in his car. The boy was shot in the head as he sat in the back seat, prosecutors said.
His mother wasn’t hurt.
Harris and Ward were convicted in 2019 on one count each of second-degree murder, attempted murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle and being a felons in possession of a firearm.
“The pain caused by the loss of a young child is unimaginable, more so when it’s caused by senseless violence,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said. “Today’s life sentences will ensure these men will never hurt another innocent victim again.”
