JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The state Department of Corrections said Tuesday that an inmate has died at Central Mississippi Correctional Facility.

The department said Ronald Frederick Apgar III, 39, was pronounced dead Friday. He was serving 12 years for grand larceny and false pretense. Apgar was sentenced March 15, 2018, in Harrison County.

At least 16 Mississippi inmates have died this year, according to the department.

The department said last week that an inmate from Central Mississippi Correctional Facility and another from Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman had died in hospitals.

Emmett Entrekin, 70, died Feb. 16 at the hospital in Parchman. Entrekin pleaded guilty to murder in Stone County. He was sentenced to life on Sept. 16, 2017.

Steven Page, 54, was removed from life support after he showed no brain activity Feb. 9 at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Page was serving a five-year sentence for a DUI conviction in Grenada County.

Autopsies will be done.

At least 106 Mississippi inmates died from late 2019 until the end of 2020. Several inmates died during outbursts of violence in late December 2019 and early January 2020. The U.S. Justice Department announced in February 2020 that it is investigating the state’s prison system.
