ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - Seven detainees at Winnebago County Jail made the most of their time when they were locked up.
The Rockford Register Star reports that the seven are the first graduates of the CNC TechWorks Training program at the jail that was created to help them land jobs in the manufacturing process in which computer software dictates the way factory tools and machinery moves.
Through a partnership of the county sheriff’s department and Rock Valley College, students spent eight weeks in a the training program that helps them develop skills they need to deal with advanced technology and changes in the manufacturing industry.
The students who completed the program were awarded national machining certificates and credentials they will need to land jobs in the field.
The graduate, the students had to undergo performance and theory assessments and pass test given by the National Institute of Metalworking skills.
Students also took part in a 30-hour job readiness course in which a Rock Valley College instructor helped them put together resumes and write cover letters. And they also helped them determine where they might look for jobs.
The sheriff’s department and the college hope to graduate a total of 56 people in the first year of the program.
