BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A 3-year-old boy is expected to survive after finding a gun inside of a Louisiana home and shooting himself with it, according to police.

Baton Rouge police told news outlets that the boy was rushed to the hospital Monday night with gunshot wounds, and medical staff notified the department.

The child’s parent told authorities that the toddler got his hands on the weapon and accidentally shot himself, said Baton Rouge Police Sgt. Don Coppola Jr.

An update on the boy’s condition was not available Tuesday.

Police did not say whether any charges would be filed in the shooting.
