LAS VEGAS (AP) - A man found dead in a burned apartment after shooting at a woman and exchanging gunfire with officers killed himself with a gunshot to the head, police said Friday.

Demarko Henderson, 39, fired once and missed the woman fleeing an apartment when officers arrived Tuesday morning at a residential complex southeast of the Las Vegas Strip, Assistant Clark County Sheriff Christopher Darcy told reporters .

The woman’s daughter had summoned police, saying her mother passed her a note asking for help, Darcy said.

The shot hit a railing near the woman, Darcy said, and Officer Jody Cunningham fired three times as Henderson retreated into a second-floor apartment.

Police body-worn camera footage showed officers ushering the woman to safety before SWAT officers and crisis negotiators arrived.

Minutes later, after several shots were heard, Officer Manuel Papazian fired five times with a rifle at a window where Henderson “appeared to be pointing a firearm at officers,” Darcy said.

A short time later, smoke came from the apartment resulting from a fire that Darcy said investigators believe Henderson started.

Several hours later, police entered and found Henderson in a bathroom with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Darcy said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
