The ongoing Senate impeachment of Donald J. Trump — now a private citizen whose constitutional rights differ not from yours or mine — is a tyrannical abuse of congressional power. The perpetrators, who possess neither the common sense nor the moral intelligence of Forrest Gump, are intentionally bastardizing the text and purpose of the Constitution’s impeachment clause to crush a political foe and his legitimate movement.

Their on-camera moral preening insults the intelligence of those who see the charade for what it really is: a Soviet-style show trial of a private citizen, designed to accomplish three specific objectives: to destroy Donald Trump’s constitutional right to pursue a political career they believe presents an existential threat to their agenda; to demonize his supporters; and to intimidate anyone outside the elite political class from pursuing a similar agenda.

Let the implications of this cynical corruption of power sink in for a moment. Our elected representatives, who are sworn to uphold the rules of law outlined in the Constitution, are intentionally misreading the word and purpose of that document so as to crush the rights of those who oppose them.

That is exactly what is now happening on Capitol Hill. It should horrify and anger every American, for it disgraces the legacies of so many who fought and died to preserve our freedoms and our right to confront governmental corruption and ineptitude.
