CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) - State officials are investigating a deadly shooting involving Clemson Police Department officers that left one man dead.

Officers were investigating reports of a man and a stolen moped at a gas station in Clemson shortly before the shooting on Thursday, The Greenville News reported.

Officers engaged in a struggle with the man, who “presented a firearm,” Clemson Police Chief Jorge Campos said. Campos said officers defended themselves by firing shots.

Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley identified the dead man as 25-year-old Gregory Chandler Metz, 25, of Greenville.

No Clemson police officers were injured in the shooting, Campos said.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting. The agency is typically called in to investigate shootings involving police officers or deputies.
