WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - The College of the Holy Cross on Wednesday announced that Boston College Law School Dean Vincent Rougeau has been named the school’s new president.
Rougeau, who was unanimously approved by the the board of trustees on Tuesday, is the first Black and first lay president in the Jesuit school’s history that dates to 1843.
He takes over on July 1 from the Rev. Philip Boroughs, who announced in September that he would step down at the end of June after nearly 10 years as president of the Worcester school.
“Vincent brings the strategic vision, deep experience as a faculty member and administrator, and commitment to liberal arts education that will allow him to lead Holy Cross in meeting the many challenges facing higher education today,” trustees Chair Richard Patterson said in a statement.
Rougeau is a national expert in Catholic social thought. At Boston College, he led a reorganization in leadership structure to support a more holistic approach to student services, expanded the school’s national and international recruitment of a diverse student body, and enhanced the school’s commitment to experiential learning and global engagement.
“I have long admired the college for its academic excellence, its talented students and accomplished alumni, its dedicated faculty and staff and its unique place as our nation’s only Jesuit, Catholic liberal arts college,” Rougeau said.
Before joining Boston College in 2011, Rougeau was a tenured professor of law at Notre Dame Law School.
Holy Cross has about 3,100 students.
