MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Two young children found unresponsive in a blaze at a Tennessee apartment have died, fire officials said.
An adult and another small child remained hospitalized in critical condition after Sunday’s fire in Memphis, a statement from the city’s fire department said.
Firefighters arrived at the scene to find smoke visible from the two-story wood-frame apartments, the statement said. Crews got the blaze under control and during a search found one adult male and three small children unresponsive, firefighters said.
One male and one female child were later pronounced dead, officials said. Their names and ages of the victims have not been released.
The cause of the fire was determined to be cooking oil left unattended on the kitchen stove, fire officials said. It wasn’t clear if the residence had a working smoke detector.
