A Minnesota high school and George Floyd’s alma mater in Texas will play a basketball game against each other Tuesday night in Floyd’s honor.
Minneapolis North High School, a premier program located six miles from where Floyd was murdered by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, is facing off versus Jack Yates Senior High School, where Floyd played football and basketball as a high school student in Houston in the inaugural George Floyd Jr. Memorial Holiday Classic.Â
The game will take place at North Central University, where Floyd’s family held his funeral. The Minnesota Black Basketball Coaches Association organized the game.
Chauvin was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in April — nearly a year after a video went viral of Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes. In June, Chauvin was sentenced to 22 1/2 years in prison.Â
