Three college football bowl games have been canceled due to COVID-19, and another is on the verge of being shut down.
Miami announced Sunday that it will not play against Washington State in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, scheduled for Friday, due to COVID-19 concerns within the program. Jennifer Strawley, the Hurricanes’ athletic director, said the team had too many COVID-19 cases, making it too difficult to compete.
Bernie Olivas, the Sun Bowl’s executive director, said Sunday in a statement that the game, scheduled for Friday in El Paso, Texas, has not been canceled and that the Sun Bowl Association is looking for a replacement to play against Washington State.
Several other college football bowl games have been impacted by the pandemic. The Hawaii, Military and Fenway bowls were all canceled due to the virus.
Miami becomes the third ACC team unable to participate in its bowl game, joining Boston College and Virginia, both of which had COVID-19 outbreaks.
In addition, the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl, scheduled for Friday, recruited Rutgers to play in the game after Texas A&M withdrew due to a COVID-19 outbreak.
